Almost Cinema will open with a documentary about Darfur. New this year are the conference days
Almost Cinema, een jaarlijks evenement van Vooruit en Filmfestival Gent, biedt een boeiende kijk op de flinterdunne scheiding tussen film, mediakunst, theater en muziek. Het volledig programma wordt toegelicht op de Vooruitsite.

De opener van Almost Cinema 07 op 9 oktober is Sand and Sorrow, een beklijvende documentaire over de genocide in Darfoer (Soedan).
The opener of Almost Cinema 07 is Sand and Sorrow, a gripping documentary about the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan.
Ontgoocheld over de weinige aandacht die de gruwel van Darfoer in de media kreeg, besloot documentairemaker Paul Freedman (US) het conflict aan te kaarten in een film. Hij koos voor een serene aanpak: geen overbodige informatie, wel beelden die voor zich spreken en aangrijpende interviews. Niemand minder dan acteur George Clooney (US) leende zijn stem aan Sand and Sorrow en trad op als coproducent. (Zie www.sandandsorrow.org.)
Documentary filmmaker Paul Freedman (US) was so shocked about how little attention the atrocities in the Sudanese region received in the media, that he decided to make a documentary about the conflict himself. He chose to use a serene approach: no excessive information, but images that speak volumes and gripping interviews. Na de filmvertoning kan het publiek kennismaken met de Soedanese zangeres Rasha. Zij groeide op in Khartoum en kent als geen ander de problemen waar Soedan onder gebukt gaat. Op de vlucht voor de etnische conflicten, verhuisde ze tien jaar geleden naar Spanje. Op het podium leent Rasha haar indrukwekkende stem aan traditionele Afrikaanse muziek, Arabische poëzie en reggae.
After the film, Sudanese singer Rasha will take the stage. She grew up in Khartoum and therefore has an insider’s view of the situation in Sudan. Fleeing from ethnicity conflicts, she moved to Spain ten years ago. On stage, Rasha uses her powerful voice to mix traditional African music, Arabic poetry and reggae.
Een nieuwigheid in het programma van Almost Cinema is het symposium, waarvoor Vooruit ondersteuning krijgt van het academisch platform Interface. Dag 1 op 11 oktober draait rond Immersion – The Art of the True Illusion. Deze kunstenaars, kunstwetenschappers en filosofen geven daar hun visie weer op immersie: Oliver Grau, Marnix De Nijs, Christa Sommerer & Laurent Mignonneau, Eva Seela, Kurt Vanhoutte, Philippe Bekaert, Christel Stalpaert en Chiel Kattenbelt. Dag 2 op 12 oktober focust op The Cinematic Experience – From Photographic Storytelling to Audiovisual Composition met deze sprekers: Arjen Mulder, Joost Rekveld en Gregory Kurcewicz.
New this year are the conference days; which Vooruit will be organising in association with INTERFACE. The theme of the first day (11 Oct) will be Immersion – The Art of the True Illusion. Artists, art historians and philosophers will be giving their opinion on the subject. Guests will include Oliver Grau, Marnix De Nijs, Christa Sommerer & Laurent Mignonneau, Eva Seela, Kurt Vanhoutte, Philippe Bekaert, Christel Stalpaert and Chiel Kattenbelt. On day 2 (12 Oct) we will be focusing on The Cinematic Experience – From Photographic Storytelling to Audiovisual Composition, with the following guests: Arjen Mulder, Joost Reekveld and Gregrory Kurcewicz.
Almost Cinema nodigt kunstenaars uit die inspiratie putten uit het medium cinema, maar koppig afwijken van het vertrouwde pad om nieuwe wegen in te slaan. Na de succesvolle editie vorig jaar, zet Vooruit voor Almost Cinema opnieuw een video- en installatieparcours op touw waarin zowel nationale als internationale kunstenaars hun stek krijgen. Daarnaast worden er elke avond films, muziekdocumentaires, performances, concerten of gesprekken over (bijna-)cinema geserveerd. Almost Cinema will be inviting artists that are inspired by cinema, but refuse to conform to its idiosyncrasies and, instead, walk new, unbeaten tracks. Following in the footsteps of last year’s successful edition, Vooruit will once again be setting up a video and installation art trail which will welcome national as well as international artists. On top of that, you will be able to enjoy films, music documentaries, performances mixing drama and dance, concerts or talks about (almost) cinema every evening.
