Vooruit-exe

Deepblue is de naam van het kunstenaarstrio Heine R. Avdal, Christoph De Boeck en Yukiko Shinozaki. Vaak werken ze elk apart aan projecten, maar zo nu en dan slaan ze de handen in elkaar en komen ze naar buiten met een collectief stuk. De laatste keer dat ze samenwerkten was in 2003 met Closer. Die voorstelling ging in Vooruit in première en kende nadien een succesvolle internationale tournee. Nu presenteert het trio een nieuw stuk, dat ook in Vooruit in première gaat: You are here, van 22 t/m 24 mei 2008 te zien in onze Domzaal.

Deepblue is the name of the artist trio Heine R. Avdal, Christoph De Boeck and Yukiko Shinozaki. Although they often work on projects individually, every now and again they join forces to produce a collective work. The last time they worked together was in 2003 with Closer. The exhibition premièred in Vooruit before embarking on a successful international tour. Now the trio are presenting a new piece, which will also première in Vooruit: You are here, on show from 22 to 24 May in our Dom Hall.

Begin dit seizoen was Heine R. Avdal nog te gast in Vooruit met zijn installatie/voorstelling drop a line, tijdens ons feest voor 25 jaar Vooruit. Wie toen tot in de bovenste studio van de achterbouw klom, kwam terecht in een wonderlijke glooiende omgeving vol mos: een oase van rust in een verder hectische omgeving vol feestgedruis. Je kreeg er groene thee te drinken en met wat geluk (er was een inschrijvingslijst) kon je naar binnen bij de geïntegreerde (en intrigerende) Box with Holes. Daar kreeg je gedurende 10 minuten een performance van je eigen handen met die van 1 performer te zien en te voelen. Wie het meemaakte, weet het zeker en vast nog.

At the beginning of this season, Heine R. Avdal was also a guest of Vooruit with his installation/performance, drop a line during the 25th anniversary celebrations at Vooruit. Those who then made the climb to the uppermost studio in the rear building arrived in wonderfully glowing surrounds full of moss: an oasis of peace in the otherwise hectic environment of the festivities below. Visitors were served green tea and with a bit of luck (there was a registration list) could enter the integrated (and intriguing) Box with Holes. There you could watch and feel a 10-minute long performance of your own hands with those of one performer. Those lucky enough to have experienced it would most certainly still remember it.

Dezer dagen is deepblue in Vooruit in residentie om de laatste hand te leggen aan de voorstelling You are here. Daarom kon ik al een blik werpen in de interne keuken en ik wil jullie die niet onthouden, want de ingrediënten zien er lekker uit. Deepblue vergelijkt het theater met een archief van ideeën en concepten. Net als een archief loopt het theater over van goed bewaarde hersenspinsels. Projecten die ze zouden willen realiseren? Of die er ooit al stonden? Of die simpelweg onhaalbaar zijn in het echte leven? Als je een archief opent, komt er een voorbije wereld tevoorschijn. Wie echter het theater binnenwandelt, begeeft zich hier en nu ook in een ongekende wereld, die misschien wel onverwachte plotwendingen in petto heeft…

Deepblue is currently in residence at Vooruit to put the finishing touches to the exhibition, You are here. Which is how I was able to snatch a peak at the menu. I wouldn’t want to withhold anything because the dishes look delectable. Deepblue compares theatre to an archive of ideas and concepts. Just like an archive, the theatre runs on well-preserved thoughts. Projects they’d like to realize? Or which have already come to fruition? Or which are simply not realistic in this life? If you open an archive, a world that is passed appears. Those who step inside a theatre, however, also enter an unknown world, which may well have unexpected twists in store.

You are here, zegt de titel. Maar het theater kan ook een plek zijn voor escapisme, weg van die dimensie die we realiteit noemen. Een voorstelling die dus twee begrippen tegelijk wil tackelen: het theater als reële ruimte en het theater dat zich opent als een doos vol ongekende mogelijkheden, weg van het hier en nu.

You are here is the title. But theatre can also be a place for escapism, away from that dimension we call reality. An exhibition which thus aims to straddle two concepts: theatre as real space and theatre which opens like a box full of unknown possibilities, away from the here and now.
