Het begint een traditie te worden: de eerste twee weken van maart schiet het Vooruit-festival the game is up! zonder pardon alle kanten uit. In 2007, bij de eerste editie van the game is up! luidde de ondertitel You are about to do something you shouldn’t. Toen vroegen we ons af hoe kunstenaars verwijzen naar het spel, met zijn eigen codes en regels. In 2008 werd dat Art for sale en stelden we de precaire relatie tussen de (commerciële) markt en de kunst centraal.

It’s starting to become a tradition: the first two weeks of March, Vooruit festival the game is up! bounces every which way it can. In 2007, the first edition, the subtitle was You are about to do something you shouldn’t. Back then, we wondered how artists refer to the game, with its own codes and rules. With the 2008 theme Art for sale we questioned the fragile relation between the (commercial) market and art.

Ook in 2009 werken we onder de noemer the game is up!. Het festival wil meer dan ooit een publieksfestival zijn waar een nieuwsgierig publiek met (in Vlaanderen) onbekend maar sprekend internationaal werk kan kennismaken.

In 2009 we’ll continue to work under the title the game is up!. More than ever, the festival wants to be a festival for the audience, at which a curious audience can discover sparkling international artists that are as yet unknown in Flanders.

Op vrijdag 12 december 2008 lanceert Vooruit het (proef)project ‘Korte Metten, met artistieke projecten uit heel verscheiden disciplines: korte performances, muzikale interventies, video, installatiewerk, lezingen, actie en reactie… Korte Metten wordt een broeikas voor klein, kort, voorlopig, hybride of geïmproviseerd werk; een opendeurdag in de hoofden van het creatief gebeuren. Daarbij zal de rol van een kritisch en bevragend publiek cruciaal zijn.

On Friday the 12th of December 2008, Vooruit will launch the (test) project ‘Korte Metten’, with artistic projects from all sorts of different disciplines, short performances, music interventions, videos, installations, seminars, action and reaction… Korte Metten will be a hothouse for small, short, temporary, hybrid or improvised work; an open day for creativity, where a critical and curious audience will play an essential role.

Oktober stond in het teken van de derde editie van Almost Cinema. De samenwerking met het Filmfestival Gent bestaat al langer maar sinds we Almost Cinema lanceerden, komen we met een duidelijker geprofileerd programma naar buiten. Basisidee is om kunstenaars te presenteren die niet of niet in de eerste plaats filmmaker zijn, maar die hun roots hebben in mediakunst, muziek en podiumkunst en van daaruit werk formuleren dat gerelateerd is met film of de cinemawereld.

In October, Vooruit hosted the third edition of Almost Cinema. We have been working with the Ghent Film Festival for longer, but since we launched Almost Cinema, the programme has a clear profile. The basic idea is to present artists who are not, or not primarily, filmmakers, but who have their roots in media art, music, theatre and dance, and formulate work that is related to film or the world of cinema from this perspective.

Op 20 april 2007 lanceerde Vooruit een nieuwe website met een uitnodiging aan onze bezoekers om te ontdekken, personaliseren en delen met andere bezoekers. Sedertdien hebben we niet stilgezeten. De web 2.0-site (met beta-label) kreeg regelmatig kleine updates. Ondertussen werkten we achter de schermen aan grotere veranderingen, die de website eenvoudiger, rijker en interactiever zullen maken. Nog in december 2008 doen we een zgn. soft launch van de vernieuwde website. In januari 2009 staat de vernieuwde site dan online.

On the 20th of April 2007 Vooruit launched a new website, inviting our visitors to discover, personalize and share with other visitors. And we haven’t exactly been sitting still since then. The web 2.0 site (beta version) underwent regular updates. In the meantime, we worked on bigger changes that would make the website simpler, richer and more interactive. In December we will soft launch the new website. The new site will go online in January 2009.

Er komt een nieuwe editie van Istanbul Ekspres, een coproductie van intercultureel centrum De Centrale en Vooruit (zie verslag editie 2006): van 15 t/m 24 januari 2009. In het kader van dat muziekfestival presenteren Vooruit, De Centrale, Victoria Deluxe en C.H.I.P.S. vzw een intercultureel digitaal jongerenproject.

There will be a new editon of Istanbul Ekspres, a co-production of intercultural centre De Centrale and Vooruit (see the report of the 2006 edition – Dutch only): from the 15th to the 24th of January 2009. For this music festival, Vooruit, De Centrale, Victoria Deluxe and C.H.I.P.S. vzw will present an intercultural digital youth project.

Welke ideeën zijn innovatief? Wat bepaalt dat ze vertaald worden in een baanbrekend(e) product/dienst? Voor zijn Innovatie special 2008 (pas verschenen) voerde IT-vakblad DataNews een innovatie-enquête uit. De resultaten van die enquête werden getoetst bij een panel van CIO’s uit de diensten/verwerkende sector. Wouter Vermeylen, IT-manager/hoofd gebouwbeheer in Vooruit, zat mee rond de tafel.

Which ideas are innovating? What determines whether they are translated into a pioneering product or service? In its 2008 Innovation special (just out), IT magazine DataNews published an innovation poll. The results of that poll were presented to a panel of CIOs from the services/processing sector. Wouter Vermeylen, Vooruit’s IT manager and head of building management, joined the debate.

“Mensen willen dat ik hun angst voor de islam kom wegnemen.” Dat is de missie van Kader Abdolah en die boodschap verkondigde hij met verve in een vol gelopen Theaterzaal afgelopen maandag 20 oktober 08. Met zoveel verve zelfs dat het wel een opvoering leek die qua theatrale overtuigingskracht kon wedijveren met een Tom Lanoye op z’n best. Vragensteller Yves Desmet hield zich relatief gedeisd en liet Kader Abdolah enthousiast oreren en net dàt was de bedoeling. Deze avond paste in het kader van Uitgesproken, een nieuwe reeks waarin verlichte geesten met een uitgesproken mening eindelijk de kans krijgen die mening ook uit te spreken. En dat is exact wat gebeurde: voor wie Kader Abdolah die avond hemel en publiek hoorde bezweren, mag het geen wonder heten dat zijn laatste boek De Boodschapper heet.

“People want me to take away their anxiety about islam.” That’s Kader Abdollah’s mission, and he passionately spread his message in a full Theaterzaal on the 20th of October 2008. He was so passionate that he could easily stand comparison with the theatrical persuasion of Tom Lanoye on top form. Asking the questions was Yves Desmet, who kept a low profile and let Kader Abdollah orate enthusiastically, which was the intention. This evening was part of Uitgesproken, a new series in which enlightened spirits with clear opinions finally get the chance to speak their mind. And that is exactly what happened: everyone who heard Kader Abdollah beseeching the heavens and the audience knows why his book is called De Boodschapper (The messenger).

Van 19 tot en met 24 december organiseert Studio Brussel voor de 3de keer Music For Life. Met een radiomarathon vanuit Het Glazen Huis prikkelen onstuimige Stu Bru presentatoren het publiek om geld in te zamelen voor een goed doel waar Het Rode Kruis zich voor inzet. En Het Glazen Huis staat deze keer ‘op het Zuid’ in Gent, op een boogscheut van Vooruit dus. Wij lopen al warm voor de actie, en zullen ons voor het volle pond inzetten om enkele Music for Life acties te hosten.

From the 19th to the 24th of December, radio station Studio Brussel will organise the third edition of Music For Life. With a radio marathon from Het Glazen Huis (The Glass House) passionate StuBru presenters will stimulate the audience to contribute money for a good cause supported by the Red Cross. The Glass House will be standing on the ‘Zuid’ in Ghent this year, just around the block from Vooruit. We are gearing up for the event and will do everything we can to host a couple of Music For Life events.
