De stad vormde al vaker het actieterrein voor bepaalde kunstenaars op het programma van Vooruit, dat zal ook met deze the game is up! het geval zijn. Nogal wat kunstenaars houden ervan om hun werk expliciet buiten museale muren of zalen te houden en het letterlijk midden in de stad, in de samenleving te brengen. Wij trachten erop in te spelen door hen te ondersteunen in hun stedelijke avonturen en die vooral goed te documenteren! Van een tochtje op fietsen uit auto-onderdelen gemaakt, over guerilla gardening en reverse graffiti (aka ‘clean tagging’) tot een stoet voor fanfare en vuilniskar...

The city has already been the backdrop for several artists performing at Vooruit, and we’ll continue this tradition at the game is up. Many artists like to show their work outside the context of a museum or arts centre and transport it to the streets, right into the heart of society. We try to accommodate them by supporting them on their urban adventures and document these interventions as well as we can. From a bike ride on bikes made from car parts to guerrilla gardening and reverse graffiti (a.k.a. clean tagging) to a parade with a brass band and a dustcart…

Auto’s worden fietsen

Centrale figuren in de tentoonstelling van deze ‘the game is up!’ zijn de architecten/kunstenaars Martin Kaltwasser en Folke Köbberling (zie folkekoebberling.de). Voor Köbberling en Kaltwasser staat duurzaamheid en ecologie op een heel vanzelfsprekende manier in relatie tot hun artistieke creaties. Autos zu Fahrrädern is een van de werken die we zullen tonen in de tentoonstelling, het gaat over twee fietsen die zijn gebouwd uit onderdelen van één auto, een tegendraads poëtische metamorfose. Vooraleer de fietsen een plaats vinden in de tentoonstelling, willen de makers er een fietstochtje mee maken in de stad. Wij volgen met de camera.

Cars become bikes

Central figures in the exhibition at ‘the game is up!’ are architects/artists Martin Kaltwasser and Folke Köbberling (check out folkekoebberling.de). To Köbberling and Kaltwasser sustainability and ecology are naturally related to their artistic creations. Autos zu Fahrrädern is one of the works we’ll be showing at the exhibition. The work consists of two bikes made from the parts of a single car, a poetically anarchistic metamorphosis. Before the bikes are exhibited, their makers will take them for a ride through Ghent. We’ll follow them with a camera.

Guerilla tuinieren

Met de Brusselse organisatie FoAM (zie fo.am) halen we een speciale dynamiek in huis. De kern van FoAM in Brussel (want er is ook een groep in Amsterdam en Singapore) bestaat uit Maja Kuzmanovic, Nik Gaffney en Lina Kusaite. FoAM brengt mensen en ideeën samen, gedreven vanuit een grote voorliefde om één werkterrein te maken van uiteenlopende velden als design, wetenschap, kunst, kookkunst en tuinieren. De Brugzaal wordt hun thuis voor 10 dagen, ze zullen een deel van hun bibliotheek overbrengen, workshops organiseren rond lichtenergie, presentaties geven rond stedelijk tuinieren, enzovoort. Een van de dingen op het programma is een ‘guerilla gardening’ actie. Op zondag 8 maart om 14u plannen we een workshop ‘seedballing’, geïnteresseerden (ook gezinnen met kinderen!) zijn welkom om met hun kroost modderballen te boetseren vol met zaden van planten en kruiden die vroeger weelderig voorkwamen in de stad. Op dinsdag 10 maart wordt er ‘stedelijk getuinierd’: de zaadballen worden verdeeld tijdens een gegidste wandeling door de stad. Als de regen haar werk doet, krijgen we later in het voorjaar groene sporen van ‘the game is up!’ in Gent.

Guerrilla gardening

Brussels-based organisation FoAM (check out fo.am) disposes of its own unique dynamics. The Brussels core of FoAm (the organisation has branches in Amsterdam and Singapore as well) consists of Maja Kuzmanovic, Nik Gaffney and Lina Kusaite. FoAm brings together people and ideas, driven by an ideal to create one big workplace for varied fields such as design, science, art, cooking, and gardening. De Brugzaal will be their home for 10 days, they will transfer part of their library, organize workshops on light energy, give presentations on urban gardening, etc. One of the things on the programme is a ‘guerrilla gardening’ intervention. On Sunday the 8th of March at 2 p.m. we will have a ‘seedballing’ workshop. If you are interested (families with children are also welcome!) you are warmly invited to make your own mud balls full of seeds of plants and herbs that used to be common in the city. On Tuesday the 10th of March we’ll have an ‘urban gardening’ session: the seed balls will be spread around the city during a guided walk. If the rain does its work, we’ll have green traces of ‘the game is up’ in Ghent by the spring.

Reverse graffiti

Moose aka Paul Curtis (zie symbollix.com) neemt de stad als enige actieterrein voor zijn werk tijdens ‘the game is up!’: ‘reverse graffiti’. Geen verfbussen voor Curtis want hij is enkel geïnteresseerd in ‘clean tagging’ of ‘groene graffiti’. Hij gaat steevast op zoek naar stevig vervuilde muren om er zijn patronen en tekeningen in bloot te leggen door het vuil, aan de hand van sjablonen, weg te spuiten. Groen én duurzaam want Moose’s tekeningen zullen nog lang nadat ‘the game is up!’ is afgelopen, plaatsen als de kademuur achteraan Vooruit sieren.

Reverse Graffiti

Moose a.k.a. Paul Curtis (check out symbollix.com) takes the city as the terrain for his ‘reverse graffiti’ during ‘the game is up!’. Curtis doesn’t need aerosols, as he is only interested in ‘clean tagging’ or ‘green graffiti’. He makes his patterns and drawings appear on extremely dirty walls by spraying away the dirt with the help of stencils. Green and sustainable, because Moose’s drawings will still be visible on the quay behind Vooruit and other places long after the end of ‘the game is up!’

Optocht voor fanfare en vuilniskar

De Israëlische/Zweedse muzikant Dror Feiler (zie avantart.com) wil met Basura, een optocht door de stad met een fanfare en een vuilniskar, zijn statement plaatsen bij de opening van het festival. Feiler neemt afval (in het Spaans ‘basura’) als metafoor voor onze consumptiemaatschappij. Dat mensen er maar vuil op los produceren zonder daar grondig bij stil te staan, is voor hem tekenend voor onze nefaste levensstijl. Los daarvan geraakte hij als muzikant compleet gefascineerd door het brute en krachtige geluid dat vuilniskarren produceren wanneer ze vuil ophalen. Het waren elementen die hij wou combineren in een performance met een fanfare (ook nog eens symbool voor het volkse) en een vuilkar waarmee hij bovendien zijn ‘boodschap’ ronddraagt in de stad zelf tot op de stoep van de toeschouwers. Met dank aan Ivago, de Gentse Politie en andere stedelijke diensten voor hun hulp bij de realisatie!

Parade for a brass band and a dustcart

The Israeli-Swedish musician Dror Feiler (check out avantart.com) wants to make his mark at the opening of the festival with Basura, a parade featuring a brass band and a dustcart. Feiler takes garbage (‘basura’ in Spanish) as a metaphor for our consumerist society. He considers the fact that people keep producing garbage without stopping to think typical for our toxic lifestyle. Apart from that he also became engrossed as a musician by the roaring, powerful sound dustcarts produce when picking up garbage. He wanted to combine these elements in a performance with a brass band (which also symbolizes popular culture) and a dustcart with which he manages to get his message to the audience’s doorstep.
