The game is up! is naar jaarlijkse gewoonte een platform voor een aantal internationale podiumkunstenaars die er hun werk voor het eerst in België presenteren. Om te beginnen is er de wereldpremière van W.M.D. (just the low points), de nieuwe voorstelling van Sponsored by Nobody. (zie fragment making of:)

The game is up! offers an annual platform for several international dramatists showing their work in Belgium for the first time. Kicking off the festival is the world premiere of W.M.D. (just the low points), Sponsored by Nobody’s new piece. (watch a clip about the making of:)

Dat gezelschap uit Brooklyn maakt sinds 2005 maatschappelijk geëngageerde voorstellingen. Met hun nieuwe creatie W.M.D. komen ze voor het eerst naar Europa. Na een residentie in het Antwerpse kunstencentrum Monty is de ploeg in Vooruit aangekomen voor een intense afmonteerperiode. Op de opening van the game is up!, 4 maart (en nog eens op 5 maart), spelen ze de première. W.M.D. (just the low points) is een deconstructie van de Amerikaanse cultuur, via de reconstructie van één dag uit de Amerikaanse geschiedenis. Een collage van gevonden teksten legt bloot hoe de Amerikaanse media tijdens het conflict tussen de VS en Irak omgingen met de beschikbare informatie over de zgn. weapons of mass destruction. This company from Brooklyn has been making socially aware drama since 2005. With their new piece W.M.D they will perform in Europe for the first time. After a residency in the Antwerp arts centre Monty the company has arrived at Vooruit for an intensive post-production period. The piece will premiere at the opening night of the game is up! on the 4th of March (and once again on the 5th of March). W.M.D. (just the low points) is a deconstruction of U.S. culture with the reconstruction of one day in American history. A collage of found texts exposes how the U.S. media handled information about the so-called weapons of mass destruction in the Iraq conflict. Tickets are still available! Op 6 en 7 maart toont Philippe Quesne met zijn gezelschap Vivarium Studio voor het eerst La Mélancolie des Dragons in België. De voorstelling ging in de zomer van 2008 in première op het Festival van Avignon en toert sindsdien doorheen Europa. Een bende hardrockers strand met autopech in een sneeuwlandschap. Wat er dan gebeurt, typeert het weergaloze universum van Quesne: bevreemdend maar onweerstaanbaar!

On the 6th and 7th of March Philippe Quesne and his company Vivarium Studio will perform La Mélancolie des Dragons in Belgium for the first time. The piece premiered last summer at the 2008 Festival d’Avignon and has been on a European tour ever since. As their car breaks down, a bunch of hard rockers is left stranded in a snowy landscape. What happens next typifies Quesne’s amazing universe: strange but irresistible.

Meer Belgische premières vind je terug in de tweede week van het festival. Met het weergaloze LACHEN-RIRE-TO LAUGH van Antonia Baehr halen we een Europees succesnummer naar Vooruit. Antonia Baehr is een groots opzet gestart: ze wil met een klinische en bijna mathematische precisie de verschillende emoties van de mens gaan onderzoeken. In deze eerste voorstelling concentreert ze zich op de lachende mens. Daarbij krijg je niet zozeer de aanleiding voor het lachen, maar wel het resultaat te zien. En dat verschilt nogal van mens tot mens! Antonia Baehr maakte een notatiesysteem voor verschillende lachtypes en maakt zo volwaardige lachcomposities… impressionant gebracht door haarzelf.

You will discover more Belgian premieres in the second week of the festival. Antonia Baehr’s unparalleled performance LACHEN-RIRE-TO LAUGH has been a success all over Europe. The starting point of this performance is quite ambitious: Baehr studies human emotion with clinical, even mathematic precision. In this performance she focuses on laughter. You don’t get to see the reason for the laugh, only the result. And everybody has a different laugh. Antonia Baehr has developed a notation system for different types of laughter, helping her make the fully-fledged laughter compositions she performs so impressively.

Een tweede ontdekking op het festival is de korte voorstelling Not about Everything van de nog jonge choreograaf Daniel Linehan, ook voor het eerst te zien in België, op 13 en 14 maart. Deze New Yorkse danser gooit ons al zijn vragen, zijn gedachten en zijn twijfels bij het maken van de voorstelling zomaar voor de voeten in pletwals van ideeën. Tegelijkertijd tolt hij onophoudelijk rond zijn as als een derwisj. Daniel Linehan slaagt erin om met eenvoud, gedrevenheid en een precieze timing toch zowat iedereen aan zijn lippen te kluisteren.

A second discovery at the festival is the short performance Not about everything by young choreographer Daniel Linehan, another Belgian premiere, on the 13th and the 14th of March. This New York dancer bombards us with his questions, thoughts and doubts in the production process of the piece in a steamroller of ideas. At the same time, he spins around his axle like a dervish. With his mix of simplicity, passion and perfect timing Daniel Linehan keeps the audience hanging on to his every word.
