China Express - Sounds from the Underground
Europalia focust dit jaar op China. Sinds een geslaagde samenwerking rond Rusland (Progress festival) kan Vooruit in het kader van Europalia ruimte maken om de alternatieve muziekscene van het gastland te belichten. Ook deze keer bleek dat geen evidente opdracht; een land als China is er niet happig op om artiesten uit de underground scene voor een voetlicht te plaatsen.
This year, Europalia will focus on China. After a successful collaboration during the Russian edition – the Progress festival – Vooruit will put the spotlight on China’s alternative music scene for this edition. Just like last time, this was no easy feat; China is not to keen on bringing underground artists to the public’s attention.
We vroegen aan Piet De Vroede (China platform UGent) en Wu Fei (componiste en Ghuzeng speelster ) om ons wegwijs te maken in de Chinese scene. Wu Fei woont in de VS maar verblijft en concerteert nog vaak in China. Zij is een fantastische muzikante, die reeds samenwerkte met John Zorn, Cecil Taylor, Fred Frith, ea. Aan de hand van hun informatie en suggesties stelden we een programma samen.
We asked Piet De Vroede (China platform at Ghent University) and Wu Fei (composer and Guzheng player) to familiarize us with the Chinese music scene. Wu Fei lives in the U.S. but still spends a lot of her time in China and plays concerts there. She is a fantastic musician, who has worked with the likes of John Zorn, Cecil Taylor, Fred Frith, and many more. With their help and suggestions, we managed to forge a programme.
China Express festival 2 – 4 december
Tijdens een driedaags festival, van 2 t.e.m. 4 december 2009, presenteren we werk van centrale figuren uit de alternatieve muziekscene van voornamelijk Beijing, zoals Xiao He, Shenggy, Yan Jun en FM3. Niet alles wat we voorstelden, werd door de Chinese overheid aanvaard – een aantal iconen blijft dus helaas op stal…
During a three-day festival, from December 2 through 4 2009, we will present work by key figures of mainly the Beijing music scene, like Xiao He, Shenggy, Yan Jun and FM3. Not all our suggestions were accepted by the Chinese authorities, so we’re sorry to say a few household names are missing.
Nieuwe samenwerkingen tussen Belgische en Chinese muzikanten vormen een belangrijk accent in het programma. Bijvoorbeeld componist / saxofonist / multi-instrumentalist Li Tie Qiao met drummer Lander Ghyselinck. Dergelijke producties zijn ondertussen het handelsmerk van de muziekfestivals in Vooruit.
New collaborations between Belgian and Chinese musicians form the backbone of the programme, like the one between composer / saxophonist / multi-instrumentalist Li Tie Qiao and drummer Lander Gyselinck. These productions have become the trademark of Vooruit’s music festivals.
Voor en tijdens het festival slaat het Institute for Living Voice haar tenten op in Vooruit. Verschillende muzikanten die optreden, zullen ook een workshop geven aan amateur en professionele zangers / stemkunstenaars.
Before and during the festival, the Institute for Living Voice will set up home in Vooruit. Several of the performing artists will also give workshops to professional and amateur singers and voice artists.
