Kunstencentrum Vooruit ondersteunt (jong) talent en biedt artiesten een platform aan om te onderzoeken, te experimenteren. Zo ook in het pop- en rocksegment. Het Gentse heavy metal trio Drums Are For Parades zal een jaar lang Artist-inresidence zijn in Vooruit. Op onregelmatige basis zal de band artistieke acties ondernemen en presenteren op en ook naast onze podia. De ideeën variëren van live tot online performances, interventies, video’s, concerten en streaming. Ook zal het trio de kalender van Vooruit nauwlettend in de gaten houden om er af en toe een evenement uit te lichten, er een extra aan toe te voegen of in te breken in een format. The Vooruit Arts Centre supports young talent and offers artists a platform for research and experimentation. This also goes for pop and rock artists. Ghent-based heavy metal trio Drums Are For Parades will be Vooruit’s artist in residence for one year. The band will perform and present artistic actions on and around our stages at random moments. The ideas will vary from live to online performances, interventions, videos, concerts and live streaming. The trio will also keep a close eye on the Vooruit programme, selecting an event every so often, adding extra content to it, or meddling with a format. These actions will take place under the name Drums Are For Parades selects and can be followed on vooruit.be or on drumsareforparades.wordpress.com. Zo zal de zanger en gitarist van Drums Are For Parades, Wim Reygaert, op de eerstvolgende editie van “Korte Metten” (short formats in Vooruit) woensdag 3 februari een compositie brengen met 8 computers, inkjetprinters en ventilators. Op 16 april nodigen de muzikanten van DAFP zichzelf uit als ‘special guest’ op het concert van Shining. Ze zullen een try-out spelen met bijna uitsluitend nieuwe nummers en hebben en passant de saxofonist Jørgen Munkeby van Shining gevraagd om samen materiaal op te nemen voor hun nieuwe plaat. Als de timing het toelaat zullen ze die avond zelfs al een voorproefje van die samenwerking op het publiek loslaten. Dit speciale concert is trouwens de enige clubshow van DAFP in Vlaanderen dit voorjaar.

Their first performance will take place at Korte Metten (short formats at Vooruit) on the third of Februrary, when Wim Reygaert, Drums Are For Parades’ lead singer, will present a composition with 8 computers, inkjet printers and fans. On the 16th of April, the musicians of DAFP will put in a guest appearance at the gig of Shining. They’ll mainly try out new songs, but they have also asked Shining’s saxophonist Jørgen Munkeby to record some songs for their new album together. If we’re lucky, they will already be able to give us a preview of their collaboration at this concert. And by the way, this special club concert is the only gig DAFP will be playing in Flanders this spring.

Als een rode draad doorheen de residentie wil Drums Are For Parades de clichématige fascinaties en symbolen van heavy metal verkennen, onderzoeken en injecteren met nieuwe beelden en geluiden. Bloed, de duivel, occulte symboliek maar ook ironie, humor en dubbele bodems. Jimmy Page, Aleister Crowley, William S. Burroughs maar ook Erwin Wurm, Roy Anderson en Bill Hicks. Aan de hand van een aantal interventies willen ze nieuwe rituelen en tradities in de stad introduceren.

The recurring theme during DAFP’s residency is their desire to explore the clichéd fascinations and symbols of heavy metal and infuse them with new sounds and images. Blood, the devil, symbolism of the occult, but also irony, humour and hidden meanings. Jimmy Page, Aleister Crowley, William S. Burroughs, but also Erwin Wurm, Roy Anderson and Bill Hicks. By means of a number of interventions, they wish to introduce new rituals and traditions in the city.

Drums Are For Parades is het trio van Wim Reygaert (gitaar/stem), Piet Dierickx (drums/stem) en Geert Reygaert (gitaar). Gent is hun thuisbasis. In 2007 bundelden ze de krachten om luid, agressief, maar vooral ook heel melodieus en groovy muziek te maken. Ze boren verschillende stijlen aan als heavy metal, hardcore, punk en noise rock en mixen die tot een uniek geheel. Het gaf hen de kans om te spelen in het voorprogramma Masters of Reality (Europese tournee), op Dour Festival, Domino Festival, Rock Herk en in elke zichzelf respecterende club.

Drums Are For Parades is a trio consisting of Wim Reygaert (guitar/vocals), Piet Dierickx (drums/vocals) and Geert Reygaert (guitar). Ghent is their home base. They joined forces in 2007 to make loud, aggressive, yet extremely harmonious and groovy music. They draw inspiration from several genres, including heavy metal, hardcore, punk and noise rock, blending them to a completely unique whole. They supported Masters of Reality on their European tour, and played at Dour Festival, Domino Festival, Rock Herk and significant club.

Drums Are For Parades is meer dan muziek. Ook aan het artwork, de visuals en de videoclips wordt de grootste zorg besteed. Bovendien maken de drie ook kunstinstallaties. Ze spelen al geruime tijd met het idee om interventies op te zetten in en rond Gent, in aanloop naar de release van hun nieuwe plaat. Vooruit helpt hen met deze residentie graag een handje…

Drum Are For Parades is more than just music. The artwork, visuals and music videos are created with the greatest care. On top of that, the band members also make their own art installations. They had been playing with the idea of setting up interventions in and around Ghent leading up to the release of their album for a while. Vooruit is happy to help them out with this residency.

Korte Metten gooit alles bij elkaar van korte performances en muzikale interventies over video en installaties tot lezingen en krachtige statements… Het is, kortom, een opendeurdag in de hoofden van creatieve geesten. Naast Wim Reygaert (zanger en gitarist van DAFP) met Approximatie #1 – Composition for 8 PC’s werken deze artiesten mee aan de volgende Korte Metten: Kurt Vandendriessche, Perfides (performance, try-out) / Matthew Shlomowitz, Letter Pieces (performance) / Shila Anaraki, Mark Knoop, Tom Pauwels & Tomma Wessel (performance) / Valentijn Goethals & Tim Bryon, Pieces of Quiet (concert/onderzoeksproject) / Eva Cox (literatuur) / Stef Heeren solo (concert, folkrock).

Korte Metten combines everything from short performances and musical interventions to video and installations to lectures and powerful statements. In short, it is an open day in the hearts and minds of a selection of creative spirits. Shining + Drums Are For Parades, vrijdag 16 april 2010, 20:00 / Friday the 16th of April 2010, 8 p.m., Balzaal Vooruit

Een dubbelconcert met Shining, dat 10 jaar geleden startte als experimentele jazzband en inmiddels bij progrock, elektronica en extreme metal is aanbeland. Beslist een van de opwindendste exportproducten van Noorwegen! Op de laatste editie van Noorderslag/Eurosonic – het Nederlandse showcasefestival waarop nieuwe Europese hypes worden gemaakt of gekraakt – gooiden ze hoge ogen. Volgens de Nederlandse pers “te goed om onopgemerkt te blijven”, “opwindend, hard en experimenteel. Persoonlijk hoogtepunt van de eerste Eurosonicavond”. De band zal zijn vijfde langspeler voorstellen: ‘Blackjazz’.

A double bill with Shining, a band that started out playing experimental jazz band and evolved to prog rock, electronica and extreme metal. One of Norway’s most exciting export products! The band received rave reviews at the last edition of Noorderslag/Eurosonic – the Dutch showcase festival which can make or break the reputation of any future European hype. According to the Dutch press, they were “too good to stay unnoticed”, “exciting, rough and experimental. My personal highlight of the first Eurosonic evening.” At this gig, the band will present their fifth album, ‘Blackjazz’.

De muzikanten van DAFP vervoegen niet alleen enthousiast de affiche maar lokken ook een samenwerking uit. Ze zullen een try-out spelen met bijna uitsluitend nieuwe nummers en hebben en passant saxofonist Jørgen Munkeby van Shining gevraagd om samen materiaal op te nemen voor hun nieuwe plaat. Als de timing het toelaat zullen ze die avond zelfs al een voorproefje geven van die samenwerking. Dit bijzonder concert wordt meteen de enige clubshow van DAFP in Vlaanderen dit voorjaar!

The members of DAFP will not only be performing a set at this concert, but have also secured a collaboration with Shining. They will try out new material, while also having asked Shining’s saxophonist Jørgen Munkeby to record some songs for their new album together. If we’re lucky, they will already be able to give us a preview of their collaboration at this concert. And by the way, this special club concert is the only gig DAFP will be playing in Flanders this spring.
