Vrijdag 2 april geven we het startschot van Electrified 02 – Hacking Public Space in het S.M.A.K.. Startschot is in deze het juiste woord want de opening is slechts het begin van het traject. Hacking Public Space loopt tot en met 13 juni en in die periode zullen er acties plaatsvinden in de stad die gaandeweg (via videodocumentatie of op een andere manier) worden bijgeplaatst in het museum. Er is ook een flashback naar opgemerkte acties van kunstenaars in de afgelopen decennia, daarover volgt er een lezingenavond in Vooruit op 2 juni. Op 9 mei blazen we verzamelen in Gent-Zeehaven voor een speciale geluidsperformance (locatie: Langerbruggekaai 40, 9042 Gent)

Friday the 2nd April sees the kick-off of Electrified 02 – Hacking Public Space. And the opening is just the beginning of an exciting journey! Hacking Public Space will run until the 13th of June. During this period, events will take place in the city and will gradually fill up the exhibition – in the form of videos, etc. There will also be a flashback to the past, with an evening of presentations on this theme on the 2nd of June. On the 2nd of May, there will be a special sound performance in the Port of Ghent. (Check out the pictures of the site visit.)

De eerste editie van Jazz&Sounds is achter rug. Het festival – een samenwerking tussen Vooruit, De Bijloke, Gent Jazz, het Conservatorium en KASK – slaagde erin om een brede waaier van actuele muziek te presenteren over de genres heen. In De Morgen toonde jazzrecensent Didier Wijnants zich na afloop zeer enthousiast: Een gouden formule, dat is de conclusie na de eerste editie van Jazz & Sounds. (...) Dat het goed zat, werd donderdagavond duidelijk. In Vooruit gingen nieuwsgierige (vaak jonge) mensen op zoek naar muzikaal avontuur in alle uithoeken van het gebouw. In de balzaal werden de dichters Remco Campert en Jules Deelder stijlvol ondersteund en gecounterd door saxofonist Ben Sluijs. De dichters acteerden op routine, maar Sluijs werkte hard om een samenhangend verhaal te smeden. Op hetzelfde moment stond saxofonist-klarinettist Colin Stetson in de Domzaal. Hij was de talk of the town van deze dag met zijn bijzonder indrukwekkende blaastechniek – circular breathing van een huiveringwekkend niveau. Die vrees was er ook later op de avond bij het oorverdovende, tot trance voerende geluid van Hairy Bones met Peter Brötzmann. In de wandelgangen werd over dat alles druk gepraat en dat zette de toon: een fijne drukte en een honger naar muzikale verwondering. En ook op de community van de Vooruitsite werd uitbundig gereageerd op het festival.

The first edition of the Jazz & Sounds Festival has come to an end. The festival – a collaboration between Vooruit, De Bijloke, Gent Jazz, the Conservatory, and the KASK – brought together a wide variety of contemporary music from diverse genres. De Morgen’s jazz critic Didier Wijnants praised the festival in his review, calling it “a golden formula, that’s the conclusion you can draw after the first edition of Jazz & Sounds. (…) Thursday night showed the potential of the festival. At Vooruit, adventurous – and often young – visitors were treated to experimental concerts in all corners of the building. In the Balzaal, poets Remco Campert and Jules Deelder were supported and countered in style by saxophone player Ben Sluijs. While the poets were on automatic pilot, Sluijs worked hard to create a coherent whole. At that same moment, saxophonist/clarinettist Colin Stetson was performing in the Domzaal. He quickly became the talk of the town with his formidable breath control and circular breathing. On the same night, the ear-splitting, entrancing sound of the Hairy Bones featuring Peter Brötzmann was equally awe-inspiring. People exchanged impressions in the hallways, which defined the atmosphere: pleasant, vibrant, and with a thirst for musical discoveries.” The Vooruit Community was also incredibly enthusiastic about the festival.

Op 27 maart doven 1 miljard mensen in meer dan 1000 steden over de hele wereld een uur lang alle lichten (tussen 20:30 en 21:30). Met die symbolische actie wil WWF aantonen dat we door samen te werken het verschil kunnen maken tegen de klimaatverandering! Ook Vooruit doet zijn duit in het zakje. On the 27th of March, one billion people in more than one thousand cities all over the world will turn off their lights between 8.30 p.m and 9.30 p.m. With this symbolic action, the WWF wants to show that we can tackle climate change by working together. Vooruit will also participate. We will turn of the lighting outside and will dim the lights in the hallways and the Café.

Na een klacht uit de buurt kan het stadsbestuur van Gent in het kader van de huidige milieureglementering niet langer toestemming verlenen aan muziekclub Democrazy om in Minnemeers concerten te organiseren. Vooruit besliste om de muziekclub te depanneren. De geplande concerten van Democrazy in Minnemeers vanaf 25 maart worden verplaatst naar Vooruit.

After receiving a complaint from the neighbourhood, the City of Ghent can no longer allow Democrazy to organize concerts at the Minnemeers, in view of current environmental legislation. Vooruit has decided to help out the Music Centre. The concerts that were planned at the Minnemeers from the 25th of March will be moved to Vooruit.

In 1996 bracht acteur Dirk Roofthooft voor het eerst de voorstelling De Keizer van het Verlies, deel één van een drieluik van kunstenaar Jan Fabre. Dit voorjaar presenteren Roofthooft en Fabre het derde en laatste deel, De Dienaar van de schoonheid. In Phara (op VRT – Canvas, 9 maart 2010) blikten Fabre en Roofthooft vooruit op de première in deSingel op 26 maart én voor de herneming van de volledige trilogie. In mei zijn de voorstellingen in Vooruit te (her)bekijken!

Net als Vooruit maakt het Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis Amsab voor zijn internettoegang al jarenlang gebruik van BELNET. Dat nationaal onderzoeksnetwerk levert internetdiensten en een internettoegang aan zeer hoge bandbreedte. (Vooral universiteiten, hogescholen, onderzoekscentra en overheidsdiensten maken er gebruik van.)

Recent verplichtte BELNET zijn klanten om te upgraden naar een hogere bandbreedte. Voor Amsab en Vooruit zou dat een grote investering betekenen. Als buren kwamen Amsab en Vooruit echter tot een unieke, voordelige oplossing: één internetaansluiting delen via een wireless netwerk. Samen genieten de organisaties van een vervijfvoudiging van de bandbreedte zonder extra te betalen; de kost gaat zelfs naar beneden.

Vorige week was Amsterdam voor de dertiende keer het decor voor Sonic Acts, een onregelmatig terugkerend festival rond audiovisuele kunst met een conferentie, een uitgebreid live- en filmprogramma en een tentoonstelling. De titel van deze editie was ‘the poetics of space’, en komt van het boek ‘La Poétique de l’Espace’ uit 1958 door de Franse filosoof Gaston Bachelard. We lezen in de inleiding dat het boek in detail omschrijft hoe ruimte en architectuur zijn effect heeft op mensen en dat Bachelard een pleidooi houdt voor een nieuw soort van architectuur van de ruimte waarin niet zozeer wetenschap en functionaliteit op het voorplan staat maar ervaring en verbeelding. Last week, Amsterdam played host to the 13th edition of Sonic Acts, an irregularly recurring festival for audiovisual arts, with a conference, an elaborate live programme, a film programme, and an exhibition. The title of this edition was ‘The Poetics of Space’, which comes from the 1958 book ‘La Poétique de l’Espace’ by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. From the introduction we can derive that in the book, Bachelard describes how architecture and space affect people. Bachelard also makes a stand for a new type of architecture of space, shifting its focus from science and practicality to experience and imagination.
