De eerste editie van Jazz&Sounds is achter rug. Het festival – een samenwerking tussen Vooruit, De Bijloke, Gent Jazz, het Conservatorium en KASK – slaagde erin om een brede waaier van actuele muziek te presenteren over de genres heen. In De Morgen toonde jazzrecensent Didier Wijnants zich na afloop zeer enthousiast: Een gouden formule, dat is de conclusie na de eerste editie van Jazz & Sounds. (...) Dat het goed zat, werd donderdagavond duidelijk. In Vooruit gingen nieuwsgierige (vaak jonge) mensen op zoek naar muzikaal avontuur in alle uithoeken van het gebouw. In de balzaal werden de dichters Remco Campert en Jules Deelder stijlvol ondersteund en gecounterd door saxofonist Ben Sluijs. De dichters acteerden op routine, maar Sluijs werkte hard om een samenhangend verhaal te smeden. Op hetzelfde moment stond saxofonist-klarinettist Colin Stetson in de Domzaal. Hij was de talk of the town van deze dag met zijn bijzonder indrukwekkende blaastechniek – circular breathing van een huiveringwekkend niveau. Die vrees was er ook later op de avond bij het oorverdovende, tot trance voerende geluid van Hairy Bones met Peter Brötzmann. In de wandelgangen werd over dat alles druk gepraat en dat zette de toon: een fijne drukte en een honger naar muzikale verwondering. En ook op de community van de Vooruitsite werd uitbundig gereageerd op het festival.

The first edition of the Jazz & Sounds Festival has come to an end. The festival – a collaboration between Vooruit, De Bijloke, Gent Jazz, the Conservatory, and the KASK – brought together a wide variety of contemporary music from diverse genres. De Morgen’s jazz critic Didier Wijnants praised the festival in his review, calling it “a golden formula, that’s the conclusion you can draw after the first edition of Jazz & Sounds. (…) Thursday night showed the potential of the festival. At Vooruit, adventurous – and often young – visitors were treated to experimental concerts in all corners of the building. In the Balzaal, poets Remco Campert and Jules Deelder were supported and countered in style by saxophone player Ben Sluijs. While the poets were on automatic pilot, Sluijs worked hard to create a coherent whole. At that same moment, saxophonist/clarinettist Colin Stetson was performing in the Domzaal. He quickly became the talk of the town with his formidable breath control and circular breathing. On the same night, the ear-splitting, entrancing sound of the Hairy Bones featuring Peter Brötzmann was equally awe-inspiring. People exchanged impressions in the hallways, which defined the atmosphere: pleasant, vibrant, and with a thirst for musical discoveries.” The Vooruit Community was also incredibly enthusiastic about the festival.

Er waren een aantal schitterende concertmomenten. Nieuwkomer Colin Stetson werd aangekondigd als een revelatie en maakte zijn status helemaal waar (zie YouTube video boven door Bruno Bollaert). Peter Brotzmann en Hairy Bones speelden een dijk van een concert en waren zelf ook in de wolken over wat ze op podium hadden gepresteerd. Joëlle Léandre bewees dat solo improviseren grappig én muzikaal boeiend kan zijn. Haar Nederlandse collega’s Ernst Reijseger en Wolter Wierbos deden met overtuiging hetzelfde in het Kraakhuis van de Bijloke. De première van de creatie Flat Earth Society featuring John Watts beloofde dat dit een succesrijk vervolg op de vorige FES samenwerkingen wordt (zie YouTube video onder door Bruno Bollaert). Het concert van Ellery Eskelin en Quiet Music was pure magie. En zo waren er nog unieke concerten te beleven. (Op Gentblogt lees je een rist interessante verslagen door Bruno Bollaert.)

There were several great concert moments. Newcomer Colin Stetson was announced as a revelation and more than lived up to this reputation. Peter Brötzmann and Hairy Bones played an impressive concert and were really pleased with their set themselves. Joélle Léandre proved that solo improvisation can by funny and interesting on a musical level at the same time. The solo performances of her Dutch colleagues Ernst Reijseger and Wolter Wierbos in the Bijloke were equally convincing and succesful. The premiere of the new piece by Flat Earth Society featuring John Watts promised a successful sequel to FES’s previous collaboration. The concert by Ellery Eskelin and Quiet Music was pure magic. And there were plenty of other unique performances like this.

In ieder geval doet het festival goesting krijgen naar meer. De volgende editie die zal plaatvinden in najaar 2011 zal meer oog hebben voor creatie en internationale samenwerking. Ook de samenwerking tussen de vijf partners heeft meer in zich dan wat tijdens deze edities kon gerealiseerd worden. De interactie tussen de podia Vooruit en De Bijloke en de twee educatieve instellingen (conservatorium en KASK) kan intenser en opent perspectieven.

The festival left the audience hungry for more. The next edition will take place in the Fall 2011, and will focus on the creation of new projects and international collaborations. The collaboration between the five partners has more to offer than what we were able to show at this edition. There is still room for improvement in the interaction between the different venues, i.e. Vooruit and the Bijloke, and the educational institutions, i.e. the Conservatory and the KASK. This would open new perspectives.

Schepen van Cultuur Decaluwe sprak in zijn toespraak bij de opening over het unieke karakter van de samenwerking en het feit dat het festival een levendig bewijs is dat Gent de titel Unesco City of Creative Music echt toekomt. Deze titel is volgens Schepen Decaluwe ‘niet enkel een label, maar een missie’. Missie aanvaard!

In his opening speech, Ghent Alderman for Culture Decaluwé spoke of the unique nature of the cooperation and said that the festival is vibrant proof of the fact that Ghent wholly deserves the title of Unesco City of Creative Music. According to Alderman Decaluwé, the title is “not only a label, but a mission”. Mission accepted!
