Kunstencentrum Vooruit viert in september zijn 25ste verjaardag met een spetterend feest voor iedereen op zaterdag 22 september.

Vooruit Arts Centre celebrates its 25th birthday with a big birthday bash on Saturday the 22nd of September.

Het programma wordt een cocktail van muziek, theater, performance, dans, literatuur, mediakunst en alles daartussenin, met een nostalgische blik op het verleden, een staalkaart van het heden en een open blik op de toekomst… Er staan al heel wat bijzondere projecten op de affiche, in augustus groeit de lijst van artiesten verder aan. Alvast van harte welkom!

The programme will be a cocktail of music, theatre, performance art, dance, literature, media arts and everything in between, providing a nostalgic look at the past, a sample of the present, and an intriguing view of the future. More names will be added in August, on top of the numerous interesting projects already on the bill. We hope to see you then and wish you a warm welcome.

Van 6 tot 9 september heeft de tweede editie plaats van de Flemish Jazz Meeting. Gedurende vier dagen wordt de Belgische jazz in de schijnwerpers geplaatst voor nationale en vooral internationale critici, programmatoren en organisatoren. Het programma zal workshops, debatten, infosessies en natuurlijk concerten omvatten. Op de affiche staan tien groepen gekozen door een jury samengesteld uit de Belgische jazzscène (media, organisatoren en programmatoren zoals Wim Wabbes van Vooruit).

From the 6th until the 9th of September, the second edition of the Flemish Jazz Meeting will take place. For four days, the Belgian Jazz scene will be placed in the spotlight in front of national and international critics, programmers and event organisers. The programme will include workshops, debates, information sessions and, of course, concerts. On the bill: ten bands that have been handpicked by a jury composed of members of the Belgian jazz scene (media, event organisers and programmers such as Vooruit’s own Wim Wabbes).

In Shakespeare’s Cymbeline lazen we de regel “the game is up!” (act III, scene III) en daarmee wordt bedoeld “het spel gaat beginnen!”. Welaan dan! Met ‘the game is up!, het Vooruit-festival dat op 7 februari 2007 uit zijn startblokken schiet, exploreren we alle aspecten van het spel. Codes en regels moeten er spelenderwijs aan geloven. Daar zijn samen met Vooruit heel wat artiesten verantwoordelijk voor: Stelarc (AU), Velma (CH), Crew (BE), The Yes Men (US), Cuqui Jerez (ES), Ivana Müller (HR/NL), Heine R. Avdal (NO/BE), Golan Levin & Jaap Blonk (US/NL), Monolake (DE) en vele anderen.

In Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, we came across the verse “the game is up!” (act III, scene III), meaning: the play/game is about to start. And this verse seemed to be the perfect title for a festival focusing on the artists’ wilful challenge to the concept of the game, its codes and its rules. From 7th until 16th February, the Vooruit Arts centre has invited a selection of international artists from various disciplines who play games, show us the codes (hidden or not), impose rules (some of them absurd) on themselves, or breach or parody them.

Tijdens het Progress festival in 2005 introduceerde Vooruit de Russische accordeoniste Evelina Petrova bij het Belgische publiek. Ze trad er solo op en tevens in duo met de Belgische violist Bert Van Laethem (productie Vooruit). Ook de Tsjechische violiste en vocale performer Iva Bittova heeft een geschiedenis met het huis. In 1991 gaf ze al een solo-concert in Vooruit, in het kader van Timefestival. Daarop volgden nog veel projecten (o.m. een project met jongeren in Oorsmeer en een legendarisch concert met Vladimir Vaclavek). In het voorjaar 2007 nodigt Vooruit deze artiesten uit om samen te werken.

Istanbul Ekspres – een samenwerking tussen intercultureel centrum De Centrale en Vooruit van 7 t/m 19 december 2006 – had als uitgangspunt om een beeld te geven van het kosmopolitische karakter van Istanbul. Dit gebeurde aan de hand van muziek, video, foto’s, tekeningen, film en literatuur. Het is onmogelijk om een allesomvattend verhaal te vertellen in het bestek van één festival. Toch werden vele karakteristieke elementen aangeraakt. Het was niet de bedoeling om de stad te verheerlijken en het exotische beeld op te hangen dat door vele reisagentschappen wordt verkocht. Want hoe boeiend en verscheiden ook – Istanbul is een harde en complexe stad.

Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat is de (on)welluidende naam voor het soloproject van de jonge Belgische muzikant en instrumentenbouwer Stef Heeren. Heeren tekent voor donkere folksongs met etnische instrumenten (bv. de tampura).
In augustus 2006 blikte KTAOABC in de Emielruimte van Vooruit de basis in van zijn tweede CD: akoestische gitaren, bas en zangpartijen. De andere instrumenten worden in het najaar op andere locaties opgenomen.

Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat is the euphonious (or not) name of the solo project by the young Belgian musician and instrument-maker Stef Heeren. He makes dark folk songs using ethnic instruments (e.g. the tampura).
In August 2006 KTAOABC recorded the basis for its second CD in the Emiel Room at the Vooruit: acoustic guitars, bass and vocals. The other instruments will be recorded at other venues in the autumn.
