Vooruit-exe

Vooruit heeft een traditie in het verlenen van compositieopdrachten en het (co)produceren van muziekproducties. Dit voorjaar coproduceert Vooruit samen met de Beursschouwburg een nieuw project van de Gentse componist Johan Derycke. Die is vooral bekend van zijn solo-muziektheatervoorstellingen en zijn live muziekbegeleiding bij wielerwedstrijden (Cyclophonics). Als hevige fan van Buster Keaton werkt hij nu aan een score voor Go West. Op dinsdag 23 februari te zien in Vooruit!

Vooruit has a tradition of commissioning compositions and producing or co-producing music productions. This spring, Vooruit and the Beursschouwburg are co-producing a new project by Ghent composer Johan Derycke. Derycke is mainly known for his solo performances combining music and theatre and his live musical accompaniment to cycling events (Cyclophonics). Seeing he’s big fan of Buster Keaton, he’s currently working on a score for Go West. Watch it live at Vooruit on the 23rd of February!

Europalia focust dit jaar op China. Sinds een geslaagde samenwerking rond Rusland (Progress festival) kan Vooruit in het kader van Europalia ruimte maken om de alternatieve muziekscene van het gastland te belichten. Ook deze keer bleek dat geen evidente opdracht; een land als China is er niet happig op om artiesten uit de underground scene voor een voetlicht te plaatsen.

This year, Europalia will focus on China. After a successful collaboration during the Russian edition – the Progress festival – Vooruit will put the spotlight on China’s alternative music scene for this edition. Just like last time, this was no easy feat; China is not to keen on bringing underground artists to the public’s attention.

Op zaterdag 25 april schiet muziekwerkplaats Cassette (voorheen Playground) definitief uit de startblokken met een muziekmarathon in de Handelsbeurs. Cassette ontstond vanuit de wens van Peter Vermeersch (Flat Earth Society) en enkele andere muzikanten om in Gent een vrijplaats te creëren waar muzikanten naar hartenlust kunnen experimenteren en nieuwe projecten uittesten.

On Saturday the 25th of April the Cassette music lab (formerly Playground) will celebrate its official opening with a music marathon in the Handelsbeurs. The idea for Cassette came about when Flat Earth Society’s Peter Vermeersch expressed the wish to create a music sanctuary in Ghent, where musicians can experiment and test new projects.

Pianist Misha Mengelberg is 74 en een levende legende. We halen de meester naar Vooruit voor een reeks van 3 duoconcerten met Jean Yves Evrard. Eigengereide muziek en verrassende gesprekken zullen de leidraad vormen van die Mengelberg driedaagse op zondag 19, maandag 20 en dinsdag 21 april in de Balzaal—die voor de gelegenheid een gezellig salon wordt.

Pianist Misha Mengelberg is 74 and a living legend. This master will perform a series of three duo concerts at Vooruit with Jean-Yves Evrard. Unique music and surprising conversations will form the basis of these three days of Mengelberg on Sunday 19, Monday 20, and Tuesday 21 April in the Balzaal – which will be transformed into a cosy salon for the occasion.

Op vrijdag 12 december 2008 lanceert Vooruit het (proef)project ‘Korte Metten, met artistieke projecten uit heel verscheiden disciplines: korte performances, muzikale interventies, video, installatiewerk, lezingen, actie en reactie… Korte Metten wordt een broeikas voor klein, kort, voorlopig, hybride of geïmproviseerd werk; een opendeurdag in de hoofden van het creatief gebeuren. Daarbij zal de rol van een kritisch en bevragend publiek cruciaal zijn.

On Friday the 12th of December 2008, Vooruit will launch the (test) project ‘Korte Metten’, with artistic projects from all sorts of different disciplines, short performances, music interventions, videos, installations, seminars, action and reaction… Korte Metten will be a hothouse for small, short, temporary, hybrid or improvised work; an open day for creativity, where a critical and curious audience will play an essential role.

Jazz: als je de a wat laat slepen klinkt het een beetje zoals het is – wat vuil en toch bekoorlijk. Wij aanzien jazz eerder als een vrijplaats voor creatieve muziek dan als een goed gedefinieerde muziekvorm. Henry Threadgill, met Zooid in Vooruit in november 08, vertelde ooit aan een journalist dat hij geen jazzcomponist is: “I just compose music”.

Jazz: if you let the ‘a’ drag on a bit, it sounds a little bit like it is – somewhat dirty and yet the epitome of grace. We regard jazz more as a free space for creative music than as a well-defined musical form. Henry Threadgill, with Zooid in Vooruit in November 08, once told a journalist that he was not a jazz composer: “I just compose music”.

Miel Vanattenhove, jazzproducer bij Radio 1 en Klara, jazzkenner en -pleitbezorger, is overleden. Miel was regelmatige bezoeker van de jazzconcerten in Vooruit. Hij kwam hier ook af en toe vergaderen als lid van de Raad van Bestuur van de DJ Bigband. Een innemend persoon. Miel liep meestal rond in combat baggy pants en een kaki hemd – de Hugo Chavez van de jazz, altijd klaar om ten strijde te trekken.

Miel Vanattenhoven, jazz producer at Radio 1 and Klara, jazz connoisseur and advocate, has passed away. Miel was a regular attendant of jazz concerts at Vooruit. He was also often here to attend meetings as a member of the DJ Bigband’s board of directors. A charismatic person. Miel cut a familiar figure in combat baggy pants and a khaki shirt – the Hugo Chavez of jazz, ever ready to join in the fray.
