Ons jaarlijks festival the game is up! zit erop. Tien dagen lang hebben we min of meer getracht de wereld te redden. Om vast te stellen dat dit een ontzettend moeilijke opdracht is. Kunstenaars hebben geen adequate remedies om de wereldproblemen aan te pakken. Dat wisten we eigenlijk voor we eraan begonnen. Maar kunstenaars zijn wel erg goed geplaatst om vragen scherp te stellen, problemen aan de oppervlakte te brengen en ons met associaties en nieuwe perspectieven anders naar problemen te laten kijken.

Our annual festival the game is up! is over. For ten days, we tried to save the world, but we can only conclude that this is an extremely difficult task. Artists don’t have adequate remedies to solve global problems. We already knew this before the festival started. But what artists can do is ask the right questions, expose problems and offer us a new view on certain problems.

Op 28 februari gaat Compagnie De Koe in première met haar nieuwe voorstelling ‘Burgerlijke Ongehoorzaamheid’. Het is de jonge garde van het gezelschap die met deze voorstelling de wereld wil veranderen, in een vorm van aanstekelijk jeugdig enthousiasme. Met de film ‘Le charme discrèt de la bourgeoisie’ van cineast Luis Buñuel onder de arm wagen Stefaan Degand, Pol Geusens, Nico Sturm en Nick Timmermans zich aan die nobele taak.

The 28th of February 2008 will see the première of Compagnie De Koe’s new performance, ‘Burgerlijke Ongehoorzaamheid’. The company’s young guns want to change the world with this performance showcasing their contagious enthusiasm. Inspired by the film ‘Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie’ by Luis Buñuel, Stefaan Degand, Pol Geusens, Nico Strum and Nick Timmermans set out on their mission.

In Shakespeare’s Cymbeline lazen we de regel “the game is up!” (act III, scene III) en daarmee wordt bedoeld “het spel gaat beginnen!”. Welaan dan! Met ‘the game is up!, het Vooruit-festival dat op 7 februari 2007 uit zijn startblokken schiet, exploreren we alle aspecten van het spel. Codes en regels moeten er spelenderwijs aan geloven. Daar zijn samen met Vooruit heel wat artiesten verantwoordelijk voor: Stelarc (AU), Velma (CH), Crew (BE), The Yes Men (US), Cuqui Jerez (ES), Ivana Müller (HR/NL), Heine R. Avdal (NO/BE), Golan Levin & Jaap Blonk (US/NL), Monolake (DE) en vele anderen.

In Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, we came across the verse “the game is up!” (act III, scene III), meaning: the play/game is about to start. And this verse seemed to be the perfect title for a festival focusing on the artists’ wilful challenge to the concept of the game, its codes and its rules. From 7th until 16th February, the Vooruit Arts centre has invited a selection of international artists from various disciplines who play games, show us the codes (hidden or not), impose rules (some of them absurd) on themselves, or breach or parody them.
